  • Our Updated Sock Box (and, new, Skein!) Subscriptions

    Juli 25, 2023 3 min lesen. 1 Kommentar

Exactly one year ago this fall, we launched our very first boxes – our beloved Sock Boxes! Filled with all-natural yarns and knitting goodies, they were our first foray into curating beautiful, sustainable products under one theme.

To this day, this is one of my favorite things I do here at Making Stories. Keeping an eye out for makers who share our values and create gems that I think you might love, working with them on a joint theme and color palette, designing the little stickers and postcards that go with each box, and finally packing them all up and sending them into your loving hands.

Like with all things though, you learn while you're doing, and so for our one-year-anniversary of the Sock Boxes, I knew I wanted to slightly update the concept. Based on feedback from you, I knew that you wanted an option without notions, and based on our experience with the process, I knew that I wanted to streamline the subscription a little.

So, without further ado, I'm introducing our new Sock Box and Sock Skein Subscriptions!

They will be launching on August 1, 9am CEST!

    So, what's new?

The first, and biggest change, we're making is that we're introducing a Sock Skein Subscription alongside our trusty Sock Box Subscription!

The Sock Box Subscription will contain – as it did until now – a skein of natural sock yarn, dyed in a colorway developed just for us, knitting notions, and a surprise gift.

The Sock Skein Subscription includes just the yarn, in the special colorway developed for us. This is perfect for everyone who loves natural sock yarn and wants to try different bases, but has enough stitch markers, project bags, and the like at home.
The other big change we're making is that the sock boxes and sock skeins will only be available as a subscription, not as a preorder anymore. Predicting how many boxes and skeins we will sell has been really difficult – some sold out in minutes, others not at all – and with keeping to a subscription-only model, I'm hoping to introduce a bit more predictability when it comes to how much yarn and notions I need to be ordering.

Now, I know that subscriptions are not everyone's cup of tea, which is why we're going to do bi-annual Sock Shop Updates in April and October, starting in April 2024. These sock shop updates will include overflow yarn and notions from the previous two boxes, i.e. the April 2024 update will include products from the October and January Box. Quantities of both yarn and notions in these updates will be super limited though, so if you want to make sure to get them, a subscription is the safer way to go.

I am so excited about these updates, especially about the Sock Skein Subscription, and I hope you are too. We'll open Subscriptions on August 1, with the first box / skein being the October one, and trust me, you don't want to miss this. We've lined up some amazing makers, and the October theme is gorgeous!

PS: If you currently have a quarterly sock box subscription with us, nothing changes for you! If you're on an annual plan, you got an email from me a couple weeks ago with a few changes for you. (If you didn't, let us know!)

I love the theme for Octobers sock box. I may get the skein only as I am not a fan of polymer clay (plastic) for this month stitch marker maker. But I would love to buy a full box next time if the markers are made from naturally made materials.

6 Joyful Spring Knitting Patterns - My Current Favorites!
6 Joyful Spring Knitting Patterns - My Current Favorites!

    April 10, 2024 4 min lesen.

Hi lovelies! Spring has sprung here in Berlin – as I am typing this (mid March), the buds on the chestnut tree out the window are a few days away from bursting, the forsythias are in full bloom, and our strawberry plants have started their comeback as well (leaves so far, but Aurin checks every day for berries :)).

So it's no surprise at all that today's blog post is very much inspired by the sun and the warmer days to come! I have put together a sweet roundup of 6 joyful spring knitting patterns, all of which I'd love to have on my needles soon. (If someone can get me an extra day or two per week to knit (oh, and to spin), I'd love that!)

The three yarns I've paired them with are my favorite spring / summer yarns: De Rerum Natura's Antigone, a delightful sport-weight linen yarn, Wooldreamers' Saona, a 50% Spanish cotton, 50% Spanish wool blend, and Natissea's Pernelle, our newest spring yarn: A 100% European hemp yarn!

Hi lovelies! As you might know, we are slowly, surely expanding the portfolio of the shop – I am always on the lookout for wonderful sustainable yarns that might fill gaps we still have, and one that was on the list since last summer was an additional spring / summer yarn.

When I learned about Natissea, a French yarn company dedicated to organic plant yarns, from Audrey Borrego last year, I immediately contacted them to order some samples. As soon as I had Pernelle, their 100% European hemp yarn, on the needles, it was love – grippy, but not ropey, with a lovely drape that only got stronger after a good washing and blocking session.

The shade cards had me swooning too – a really comprehensive, well-composed range of colors with something for everyone in it, from neutrals to spring-inspired pastels to deep jewel tones.

So I was so pleased when Natissea accepted us as a stockist – and I am extra excited to introduce Pernelle to you. Our first 100% hemp yarn, perfect for summer tops, T-Shirts, and lightweight sweaters!

I reached out to Mathilde over at Natissea and she graciously agreed to answer a few questions about Pernelle. I loved reading her answers!

Issue 11 - in and out by Liza Laird
Issue 11 - in and out by Liza Laird

    Hello lovelies!

I am back today with a slightly unusual post that starts with a big, big apology to Liza Laird. Liza is a wonderful author (you might know her book Yoga of Yarn), knitter, teacher and yogi, and we were supposed to publish her beautiful poem "in and out", inspired by the ocean, in our Issue 11, "Seashore".

While I was putting the final touches on our layout, I realized that we had a spread too many (we always print in increments of 4 pages, or 2 spreads) and inadvertently cut the spread with Liza's poem instead of the photo spread I meant to delete.
