Here's to a wardrobe of knits we love and want to wear for years to come!
Pernelle is a 100% European hemp yarn, perfect for lightweight spring and summer garments and shawls.
The hemp fibers used in Pernelle are grown in Romania, where they are harvested and, after they've gone through various stages of retting, drying and scutching, wet-spun. The entire production process is done by a small family-run mill - something that we love to support.
After spinning, the hemp yarn is transported to Northern France where it is dyed in a GOTS-certified dye house. The stunning color range with options for everyone, no matter whether you love neutrals, gentle pastels or glowy jewel tones, is one of the best I've ever seen!
Pernelle knits up like a fingering-weight yarn – its yardage is slightly lower with 190 meters / 207 yards per 100g, but as it's a plant yarn, it won't bloom a lot after blocking. You can knit it at quite a few different gauges, depending on how drapey you'd like your fabric!
The best part? Hemp, like linen, only gets softer with wear – and with being washed in the washing machine! The yarn is completely non-superwash, but as it's a plant yarn, you can throw it into your washing machine without any concerns.
Please note: All colors showing up as "preorder" have a turnaround time of 3 - 4 weeks. If you order something as a preorder, all items purchased alongside the preorder will ship with the preorder.

When I learned about Natissea, a French yarn company dedicated to organic plant yarns, I immediately contacted them to order some samples.
As soon as I had Pernelle, their 100% European hemp yarn, on the needles, it was love – grippy, but not ropey, with a lovely drape that only got stronger after a good washing and blocking session.
Pernelle is created in collaboration with a small family-run mill in Romania, from 100% Romanian hemp. It's dyed in Northern France in a GOTS-certified dye house, so a completely European yarn with a low transport footprint.
The shade cards had me swooning too – a really comprehensive, well-composed range of colors with something for everyone in it, from neutrals to spring-inspired pastels to deep jewel tones.
I love this plant yarn so much – it's created very thoughtfully by small woman-owned business in France in collaboration with a family-owned mill in Romania, keeping the transport footprint down. And it's a really, really good yarn!
Pernelle is perfect for a breezy summer T-Shirt like Audrey Borrego's Aigues from our Issue 11! The combination of geometric lace, light cables, and twisted ribbing makes for a super fun knit. The result is stunning and a true wardrobe staple!
If you are looking for a lightweight, layerable garment to knit in Pernelle, might I suggest Rebekka Mauser's Rayure Sweater?
I love its nautical stripes, and with Pernelle's beautiful color palette, the combination options are near endless. Delightful accents like three-quarter length sleeves and vertical lines on the body and sleeves make Rayure extra special.
Pernelle is also fabulous for a lovely, lacey shawl like Cattedrale by Valentina Cosciani. Knit at a very loose gauge, the lace is both intuitive and soothing to knit, and the resulting shawl is a wonderfully versatile addition to your wardrobe.
Pernelle is wonderful for all kinds of spring and summer knits!
It sings in stockinette and lace, and has incredible drape when you knit it up at a larger gauge.
I love it for sleeveless tops and T-Shirts like the Aigues T-Shirt by Audrey Borrego, and it's great for layering pieces as well. Think lightweight open cardigan or a striped sweater with three-quarter length sleeves – perfect for throwing over when the evening gets a little chilly.
Lastly, if you're not into garments, lace shawls would also look really pretty in this yarn!
Wonderful color and texture. Can’t wait to wear!
