John Arbon's combed tops are some of the most delightful fiber I've had the pleasure to spin! They're smooth with the exact right amount of grip so that they make for a joyful spinning experience for both new and experienced spinners.
We decided to add Appledore as the first addition from John Arbon's wool top ranges to our shop as it has an incredible origin story: All the fiber in Appledore is sourced from within 20 miles of the John Arbon mill in North Devon. The blend consists of Devon Closewool, a moorland sheep breed with lots of grip, Romney for its telltale lustre, and Exmoor Blueface for lots of bounce.
The colorways are inspired by traditional tweed textiles, and while some of them look a little wild in the combed top, they spin up into beautifully heathered yarn. Oh, and just in case you were wondering about the colorway names: They are all apple varieties!
If you are curious, check out our blog posts about the difference between wool tops, batts, and rolags and what to make with hand-spun yarn. And if you are new to spinning, how about how to get started with spinning?

I adore the work of the wonderful folx at the John Arbon mill. Founded in 2001 by John Arbon, the family-run operation has since been gently handed over into the wonderful, very capable hands of Sonja, Helena and their team.
The mill's core concept is the return to old-style textile manufacturing by sourcing raw wool locally, whenever possible, and converting it into combed tops and yarn. They're doing this on vintage machinery, and with incredible knowledge about sheep, fleeces, and how to make great tops and yarn. As one of the few small-scale worsted mills in the UK, they're an absolute treasure!
Their dedication to the craft and manufacturing shows in every single top they produce. Carefully layered colors, smooth and lustrous fiber, lovingly packaged. Fabulous for new and experienced spinners alike - and a delight on the wheel or spindle!
