Here you will find all the information you need to choose a pattern to test knit for this issue. Issue 12 includes designs by 12 designers: 6 garments featuring colourwork, lace, cables and more, and 6 accessories including socks, fingerless mitts, a cowl, and two hats. The theme Art Nouveau elicited some amazing botanical elements by our designers, and there is something for every skill level. Organic motifs, sumptuous colours and textures — this issue will have it all!
In an effort to stagger the workload for our test knitting managers and get the final pattern into the hands of our fabulous layout team faster, we have three different deadline periods. Those knittingsmaller accessories will have approximately 6 weeks, complex accessories will have 8 weeks, and garments will have 12 weeks to complete the project. You will find the deadline for each pattern under its description so please keep this in mind when selecting which pattern you would like to make! Please note that we make intentional decisions regarding the deadlines and ask that you apply for a particular pattern only if you feel confident you will be able to meet its due date.
We truly value the time our testers provide us to make the patterns the best they can be! Upon successful completion of your project and feedback survey by the due date applicable for your pattern, you'll receive either a 15% off discount code for our entire webstore (including yarn!) OR a 30% off discount code for either the print version of Issue 12 or any print issue of your choice.
Once you've had a chance to look over the patterns and sizes, head here to fill out the test knit application form where you can select your 1st and 2nd choices for the pattern you'd like to test. The application form will be open until December 8th. We will notify you if we need you to make your chosen project and size by December 11thso you can get your yarn ordered in plenty of time. The patterns will be shared on January 15th; see each pattern for its specific deadline (either February 25, March 10 or April 7). Please keep a pattern's deadline in mind as you make your test knit selection. If you think it may be hard to commit to its deadline, know that there will be additional opportunities to test for us in the future!
On to the best part! Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of this page to see all 12 patterns to choose from for this issue. We've chosen photos that are as representative as possible; some designs are still being knit so may change slightly from what's depicted. This also applies to yardage estimates and finished sizes: these may change as samples are completed and the patterns are finalized. If a discount is available for the yarn used in the pattern you'll see that as well. You may wish to check yarn prices ahead of choosing, as well as colours available, as that may impact your choice. You are welcome to use your preferred colours for any of the designs!
Sizing
The sizes listed under the design descriptions are finished object measurements and include ease recommendations. To pick the size you’d like to knit, simply add the ease recommendation to your own nude body measurements and choose the corresponding size. Example: Your nude bust circumference is 100 cm. The sweater you’d like to test knit has an ease recommendation of 5 cm and lists the following sizes: 83 (91, 99, 107, 115, 123, 131, 139) cm. Nude bust circumference + ease recommendation = 100 cm + 5 cm = 105 cm —> closest to size 4 (107 cm). You’re of course welcome to substitute the ease recommendation from the pattern with your preferred ease as well.
Inspiration for this cardigan came from Vienna`s Art Nouveau movement and watercolour paintings from the turn of the 19th century — simple shapes combined with playful patterns. One can still see these compelling ideas when strolling through Vienna, observing the city's rich architecture.
Alma is worked bottom-up, beginning in one piece before being divided for front and back at the armhole. The shawl collar is worked contiguously and, when finished, gently rolls outward. The elaborate lace pattern which graces the front is true lace, worked on both sides of the fabric, and imbues the cardigan with rich elegance. The sleeves are picked up from the armhole and knitted down to the cuff. This cardigan goes nicely with an elegant outfit but can also be worn casually with jeans, and its silhouette is beautiful in all sizes.

Nature is the source of inspiration for this ornate design in the Art Nouveau style of natural expressiveness. It explores the flowing curves and floral forms manifesting nature and beauty in every detail, from the buds on the double brim to the twigs and vines on the body which gather to form a flower at the crown. The design is for a beanie style hat with double brim and fixed folding line. It is worked bottom-up, in the round, starting with a decorative brim cast-on. It explores several techniques including Estonian cast-on, elongated bobbles, cables, knots, and wrapped stitches. The brim is worked in a patterned rib featuring crosses and small elongated bobbles. Following the serrated fold line for the brim, the hat body is worked in the opposite direction for folding the brim. Further on, the piece is worked in an all-over textured pattern up to the crown where a decorative flower is formed by the decreases.

For inspiration, the designer focused on gates and railings from the Art Nouveau era which often feature intricate details. In particular, photos taken during a trip to Prague led to considering how to balance a complex cable pattern with a simpler one.
Blatna is worked in the round from the bottom-up, then split at the armholes where front and back are then worked flat and separately. After joining the shoulder seams, the neckband is worked in 1x1 rib in the round. Sleeves are then picked up and knitted in the round from armhole to cuff. An intricate mix of cables and twisted stitches features on the front, starting from cables worked in the hem; those same hem cables traverse the garment's back.

The colourwork in this pattern is inspired by the curves and movement of beautiful, intricate, stained-glass windows. What could be overly grand on a large garment becomes wearable art when knit into a cozy pair of socks for day-to-day wear. How luxurious!
This sock is worked top-down, in the round, beginning with a long-tail cast on and 2 x 2 rib. The colourwork is charted. Scrap yarn holds the place of the afterthought heel until the entire sock is knit. The colourwork continues down the foot, and then a wedge toe is added. Finally, the scrap yarn is removed and the afterthought heel is knit in its place.

Inspired by organic themes and nature, Art Nouveau artists translated their inspiration into abstract and flowing motifs that featured an abundance of mirrored and swirled elements throughout their work. These mirrored lace socks bring the essence of this artform to the world of knitting with organic yet elegant lacework that resembles the very nature that has inspired so many artists to this day.
This sock pattern is worked in magic loop from the cuff down. Left and right socks are mirroed, with lace traveling down the outside of each leg and onto the top of the foot. After working a traditional heel flap, the sole of the foot is worked in stockinette stitch. With the lace work placement, each leg is written separately.

Ornately domed windows adorned with gold and criss-crossed by scrollwork and brilliant coloured glass are a relic from the heyday of Art Nouveau that still decorate some of our streets today. This beret pattern works with lower-contrast colours for a wearable piece that harkens back to the opulence and glam of the 19th century. This design will sing in a woolly yarn and be the perfect topper for an autumn stroll down cobblestone streets.
Begin by casting on at the crown (choosing either a flat top for a pom or a classic stem), then work your way out playing with your colour palette while increasing to create the outer diameter of the beret. Next, use decreases to pull in the width of the beret for that classic shape before finishing off with a neat double-knit or picot-folded brim.

From Hillesvâg: 'Norwegian fur sheep is a Norwegian breed of sheep different from Norwegian white sheep. Norwegian fur sheep have gray curly wool that contains both light and dark fibers. The dark fibers give the yarn an exciting depth and mélange when it is dyed. The wool is fine, soft and silky. This means that yarn made from fur wool is softer and more shiny than wool from Norwegian white sheep.'

Hedgebind is inspired by botanical themes and delicate tendrils of Art Nouveau book covers, especially those by Margaret Armstrong. The classic drop-shoulder silhouette allows the intricate colourwork panel on the front to take centre stage.
The body is worked from the bottom-up in the round, starting with a tubular cast-on. Stitches are cast on for steeks at the armholes, front neck, and back neck. The steeks are cut, and stitches are picked up round the armholes for the sleeves, which are worked in the round and tapered down to the wrist. Stitches are picked up for the neckband, which is then folded double and stitched down, enclosing the neck steeks.

A transitional garment for Fall inspired by the stylised natural forms in ironwork patterns during the Art Nouveau era, the Ironwork cowl falls over one shoulder for a loose, casual, easy-to-wear garment.
This cowl starts with 2x2 rib knitted flat to create a split border, before casting on more stitches and joining to work in the round. The pattern is worked in two-colour stranded knitting. The cable detail in the rib echoes the organic Art Nouveau tendrils in the stranded section.

Inspiration for this design originated in a long-ago trip to Prague where the designer was mesmerised by the women portrayed by Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha. A more recent encounter with Mucha's work in Prague influenced the designer's attempt to capture the dichotomy between the formatlity of geometrical lines with excessively organic, swinging shapes.
The body of the sweater is a square, boxy shape. The colourwork resembles tiles in hallways. Adding ruffles over the shoulders, front and back, lends organic shape and gives the garment playfulness. Art Nouveau depicts a feeling of glamour, grandeur and opulence, which is mirrored in the merino and silk yarn in colours that reflect Mucha’s work.

This design is inspired by a Tiffany lamp in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Reading the call for Art Nouveau designs, and specifically the Galeries Lafayette window and glass-blower designs, led the the designer to interpret the lamp within the sweater's yoke.
This sweater is worked top-down from a tubular cast on. The colourwork yoke features stranded knitting with increases, decreases and short-rows. To achieve the way the colourwork zigs and zags, the beginning of round shifts several times in the yoke. When the yoke is finished, the body and sleeves are divided and worked separately in a seamless construction.

From De Rerum Natura: 'Ulysse is, like its big brother Gilliatt, a woolen spun yarn made from a blend of white French Mérinos d'Arles (Provence) and black Portuguese merino (Alentejo valley) raised with a concern for the well-being of the animals...
'All the manufacturing stages of this yarn are carried out in a short circuit (France and Portugal for sourcing, Belgium or Italy for washing, France for spinning and dyeing) with a constant desire for traceability and to reduce its impact on the environment.'

The Waltz Fingerless Mitts feature a sinuous, dancing pattern of slipped stitches on both the front and the palm. They were inspired by the swirling, intertwining lines of Art Nouveau design reminiscent of dancers moving and twirling on the dance floor.
The mitts are worked starting at the cuff with a 1x1 corrugated two-colour rib, then the main hand fabric is worked in alternating rounds of colour with slipped stitches producing the pattern stitch. Gusset increases are worked for the thumb, with thumb stitches put on hold and finished after completion of the hand. Both the hand and the thumb are finished with matching ribbing. Note that corrugated rib provides a snug fit that is not particularly elastic. The cuff may be worked with a standard 1x1 twisted rib for an easier fit if preferred.

From De Rerum Natura: 'Bérénice is a unique blend of extra-fine Angora goat fibres from South African farms committed to animal welfare, and the soft, plump wool of our organic Merinos d'Arles, spun into loops around a strong, shiny silk yarn, then combed to give the desired tousled, voluminous look. The yarn is then dyed using ecological dyes that comply with GOTS specifications to reduce its environmental impact. We manufacture this very special yarn in Italy, near Biella.'
'Albertine is a 4 ply, worsted spun yarn made from precious fleece of Merinos d'Arles, raised in organic farming near Aureille in Provence (France) and a touch of silk (south of Shanghai, China). The silk gives this fine (21.5 microns) and exceptionally elastic wool a discreetly satiny sheen and a very nice drape. Just the right amount of silk to make each stitch a soft little luxury. These very fine fibres are combed into a ribbon to increase their softness and strength, and then spun in the Biella region of Italy, as no spinning mill in France today is capable of spinning such fine combed yarn. This single strand is then twisted to create a four strand yarn, dyed in Creuse (France).'
