Call for Submissions

For this issue, we’re looking to include 2-3 pairs of socks, 2-3 neck accessories, 2-3 head accessories, and 5-6 sweaters (T-Shirts, tops, pullovers & cardigans).

In terms of complexity, we’re looking for patterns in the full range from beginner to super advanced knitter. Most of the designs will be paired with one of our yarn partners, but if you have an idea for a stash-busting project, we’re always game!

TIMELINE

For Issue 11, we’re working with you as our designers on the following timeline:

• Submission Deadline: March 5, 11.59pm CET
• Decision & Feedback: March 6 - 9
• Pattern Due: June 11
• Sample Due: August 15
• Launch: March 2024

Important Note: You’re more than welcome to write the pattern and knit the sample at the same time. We’ve also allocated quite a bit of time for knitting up the sample which we hope will help alleviate any time pressure for you!

Tech Editing for Issue 11 will happen from mid June until the end of July; Test Knitting from the beginning of August to the end of October. We at Making Stories handle these processes for you, but we ask you to be available for questions and pattern adjustments during those time periods (especially during the tech editing phase).

COMPENSATION & RIGHTS

We here at Making Stories will take care of yarn support for your design. We’ll also handle tech editing, test knitting, photography, layout and errata updates for you. You, the designer, will be writing up the pattern with our style guide and knitting up the sample (which can be done by yourself or a sample knitter).

Compensation for your pattern is based on complexity and ranges from € 100 to € 550. We’ll reimburse sample shipping cost (from your location to Berlin) up to €10 for domestic shipping and €35 for international shipping.

We at Making Stories will hold the exclusive rights for your pattern for 4 months after publication. The pattern itself may be published, distributed and sold both in the print and the digital version of the magazine. The pattern will not be sold individually through Making Stories. After the exclusivity period, we can still continue to sell the print and digital version of the magazine that include your contribution.

Four months after the publication date, you’re more than welcome to self-publish the individual version of your pattern in either your own branding and layout or as the PDF version of the pattern that we’ll provide to you. Should you want to use your own layout, you’re more than welcome to use up to five of the official pattern photos (with photographer credit) - we’re purchasing those rights for you! You also have the option of adding your individual pattern to our new individual pattern marketplace if you'd like to do so.

SUBMISSION

Please include the following in your submission:

• a short description of the design and its construction,
• a note on how your design relates to the topic of Issue 11,
• a photo of your swatch (the full, bound off and blocked swatch),
• a sketch (ideally on a body if you're submitting a garment),
• suggested yarn weight and gauge.
