  • New in: Our Issue 9 Yarn Kits!

    Februar 15, 2023 4 min lesen.

    Hello lovelies,

today I'm back with a short, but sweet overview of the new kits and yarns we'll have for Issue 9. These are available from March 15 to April 15, or until we run out!

We'll have six kits for Issue 9 - with 3 new yarns! (And an old favorite returning.)

    Issue 9 Kits

    From left to right:

Abloom Cardigan | Anne Ginger | Biches & Bûches Le Petit Lambswool

    Abloom Cardigan Kit

Abloom is the perfect layering piece for transitional seasons, designed to be lightweight yet still cosy enough to ward off the early morning or evening chill.

Inspired by the delicate beauty of spring and the early flowers, small and ethereal, almost wispy, the rib nature of the stitch pattern allows the fabric to move with the body, thus fitting a wide range of body sizes.

For this cardigan, we're bringing back Biches et Bûches Le Petit Lambswool, a 100% Scottish lambswool yarn that's delightful to knit and wear.

We've added five shades that would all work beautifully for Abloom - and hopefully with everything in your wardrobe! Get your Abloom Cardigan Kit here.

Bouquet Sweater | Maria Magnusson | The Fibre Co. Cumbria

    Bouquet Sweater Kit

Bouquet is the kind of sweater that's effortless to wear and works with everything, and also gets compliments left, right and center.

It's central lace motif, inspired by the blooming flower beds in the designer's garden, is worked up in a heavier-than-usual-yarn for lace patterns, making it a rhythmic, enjoyable knit.

I am so delighted that we get to add The Fibre Co.'s Cumbria to our yarn lineup for this release!

Cumbria is a classic, worsted-weight yarn that knits up with a lovely crisp stitch definition and next-to-skin softness. It combines South American Merino for softness, English Masham wool for warmth, and Argentinian Mohair for lustre and strength.

A great yarn for everyday knitwear that you want to last a long, long time! Get your Bouquet Sweater Kit here.

Circle of Life Sweater | Julia Exner | Holst Garn Supersoft

Circle of Life Sweater KitCircle of Life is inspired by life awakening again in the spring - the first tips of the hyacinths breaking out of the ground, the buds on the trees getting bigger and bigger.
The comfortable circular yoke sweater features stranded colorwork, Roosimine, and lace, with each section of the yoke representing one stage in the life of a plant.

We're so delighted that we're able to add Holst Garn to our products, starting with their super star Supersoft!

Supersoft is a classic non-superwash yarn that's perfect for colorwork. It's a blend of 50% Merino and 50% Shetland, making it both soft and durable. Hold it single for a delicate fabric or double to create a DK-weight yarn.

For Circle of Life, we've put together two kits: one in the original sample colors, and one - as requested by our subscriber flock - in cool blue tones. Get your Circle of Life Sweater Kit here!

Etamine Sweater | Emma Ducher | De Rerum Natura Ulysse

    Etamine Sweater Kit
Etamine is a delightful spin on a colorwork yoke, inspired by dreaming of a huge garden full of plants.

Worked from the top-down, you start with a comfortable folded neckline before moving on to short rows to shape the neck.

The colorwork yoke is worked with increases and decreases to create the flower petals.

One of our all-time favorite (and desert island) yarns, De Rerum Natura's Ulysse is an incredibly soft woollen-spun yarn that shows texture and colorwork off beautifully.

For Etamine, we've put together kits in the original sample colors. We've also just gotten a big restock of Ulysse, so if you prefer a different color combination, play away!

Floret Socks | Makenzie Alvarez | Wool & Palette Fingering

    Floret Socks Kit

The Floret socks are destined to become a stand-out pair in your sock drawer!

Inspired by the awakening of nature from its winter slumber, they feature a bloom-like lace pattern near the cuff, followed by a repeating faux cable along the top of the foot.

For this kit, we've added a really special yarn: Wool & Palette's Fingering weight.

It's a buttery-soft Merino Rambouillet blend entirely sourced and spun in the US.

Hand-dyed by Emily in her studio with only natural extracts and foraged or home-grown dye materials, it's not only beautiful to knit with, but also to look at - and something extra special!

Get your Floret Socks Kit - available in two colors - here.

Flowers & Fields Shawl | Natalia Milas | Garthenor Organic Beacons

    Flowers & Fields Shawl Kit
Flowers & Fields is the perfect shawl for in-between seasons - lightweight, but warm enough to keep you cozy during the early spring or fall nights.

Inspired by fields that are just starting to bloom, this shawl is worked up from the tip until it reaches a very wearable asymmetrical triangular shape.

Flowers & Fields is designed for one of my all-time favorite yarns, Garthenor Organic Beacons, and I am so happy we got our hands on a few more colors to put together these kits!

Beacons is a blend of Polwarth, Romney and Hebridean transformed into a worsted-spun DK weight yarn. Get your Flowers & Fields Shawl Kit here.

Tell me - which one do you want to cast on first?

Thoughts on closing down a knitting magazine
Thoughts on closing down a knitting magazine

    November 19, 2024 12 min lesen.

As a lot of you might have suspected I have, at last, made the decision to definitely close down Making Stories Magazine after Issue 14, our 2025 Fall & Winter issue. This means we still have two issues to go - Issue 13, coming out in March (Confetti & Rainbows!!), and Issue 14, coming out in September. I wanted to share this decision with you bright and early as I don’t feel like holding this in when we publish our last Spring and then our very last Fall & Winter issue. I want to celebrate those issues, and the work that we have done over the last eight years, and I want to be able to share the bittersweet feelings that will inevitably come up when the list of “lasts” still do be done gets shorter and shorter.

All the knits I finished while recovering from surgery
All the knits I finished while recovering from surgery

    Oktober 28, 2024 8 min lesen.

About three weeks ago, I had surgery. Nothing major, and it was planned - but it was my first time undergoing general anaesthesia and facing an uncertain recovery period, both of which made me quite nervous. I knew that I was going to be in the hospital for two days, if everything went well, but then it was between one and three weeks of recovering at home, depending on how fast my body was going to heal.

Needless to say, I packed knitting for the hospital, but I didn’t feel like picking up my needles until my second day in the hospital. And then I knit. I knit, and knit, and knit. Curiously enough, I always get the urge to clear off my needles this time of the year - something about the weather changing, sweater season approaching, maybe? And this year, this urge coincided with me wanting to do something while watching copious amounts of Netflix without having to think very hard about what I was going to knit. Win win!
