Black Isle Yarns' Killen Sock is a fabulous all-natural sock yarn, custom-spun for Julie who dyes each skein lovingly, using only natural dyes.

It's a blend of 80% Bluefaced Leicester, sourced from The Arr Farm, very close to where Julie is based in Scotland, and 20% Mohair, sourced responsibly in South Africa.

The yarn is spun in Yorkshire, to a really high twist, which makes it extremely well suitable - together with the Mohair - for socks!

We carry it in two exclusive colorways that Julie dyed up for our October Sock Subscriptions. When they're gone, they're gone!

Why we love this yarn:

I've known and admired Julie since I started Making Stories - she was one of the first indie dyers I met!

Her dedication to custom spinning yarns that are super responsibly sourced, ideally from fleeces really close to her beautiful home in Scotland, has been an inspiration from the beginning.

Seeing her work grow and evolve over the years has brought me so much joy, and so I'm super excited that we finally have some of her beautiful naturally-dyed yarns in the shop!

Killen Sock is a fantastic all-natural sock yarn with great stitch definition thanks to it's high twist. What's more, the 80% Bluefaced Leicester used in this blend are sourced from The Arr Farm, just across from where Julie is based.

And the icing on the cake? The gorgeous layers of color Julie achieves, using only natural dyes!

Crystal Socks

These cosy socks were inspired by heirlooms passed down in Izabela's family for generations - crystal vases. Crystal is more delicate than glass and is cut to create intricate designs on the surface. The lines intertwining in very geometrical, sharp patterns that are characteristic for certain types of crystal vases are reflected in these beautiful socks.

Killen Sock is designed to be a sock yarn, so ... socks is what I would knit with it!

It works really well for any textured patterns, even small-scale ones, as the halo from the mohair is not too pronounced.

It's also great in soothing stockinette as that shows off Julie's dyeing skills really well!

If socks are not your jam, this yarn drapes wonderfully, so a lightweight sweater or shawl looks also great in Killen Sock!
