Making a sustainably fluffy yarn is incredibly, incredibly hard. Two of the "ingredients" of the typical fluff yarns are more often than not grown and processed under less-than-ideal circumstances, Mohair and Silk.
Leave it to the fabulous folx over at De Rerum Natura to take on the mammoth task of creating a fluffy yarn that is not only fantastic to knit with, but as sustainable as it can be.
They blended the highest-standard Mohair that's available with organic Merino d'Arles to cut down on the carbon footprint of the yarn, and then used GOTS-certified dyes to create a rainbow of beautiful colors.
If you, like us, love to play with different yarns, like to combine them to create super soft fabrics, or adore the whisper of a garment you can make by using fluffy yarns on their own, Bérénice is going to be a firm favorite in your yarn cupboard, we promise.
Theophrastus by Valerie Rachel is a delightful whisper of a T-shirt - light, airy, marled, ruffles. It looks great over jeans as well as skirts, and is, for us, the embodiment of spring in a garment.
Hold Bérénice double with Ulysse to make Bindweed, one of our all-time best-selling patterns! Created by Ksenia Naidyon for Issue 5, this stunning open-front cardigan balances the most gorgeous cabled balloon sleeves we ever laid eyes on with a modern, cropped shape.
Altocumulus by Fiona Alice was inspired by the comforting feeling of gazing up at the clouds. What better pattern than to knit with Bérénice, the most cloudy yarn of all times? Pair it with Ulysse, and you have the perfect combination for this triangular shawl. The combination of mohair and lots of texture creates a fabric that you cannot wait to squeeze between your fingers and wrap around your shoulders as you embrace the changing weather outside.
Oh, what can you not knit with Bérénice?
First off, you can hold it single and create the most delightfully light fabric that you could possibly knit. Great for superlight tops and T-Shirts, or for a lacey shawl.
Secondly, you can hold two strands of Bérénice together to create a still-light-weight, but a bit more substantial fabric. This is great for summery T-Shirts (like Theophrastus shown here)!
Thirdly, how about combining Bérénice with another yarn in the same project? Take Ulysse, for example, our all-time favorite sport weight yarn - held together with Bérénice it creates a beautiful halo-ey fabric that still shows off stitch patterns really well. Perfect for sweaters for the in-between seasons or shawls that become extra-cozy with adding fluffy yarn!
Lastly, have you ever tried combining a heavier-weight yarn with a fluffy lace yarn? Like Gilliatt, Ulysse's big sibling - held together with Bérénice, it'll make a fantastically soft and slightly sparkly fabric. Fabulous for large-scale cabled sweaters!
The range of colours is huge, and the yarn is so soft in your hands, so easy to knit. I love it.
