  • Socktober is in full swing! Want to do a little project planning?

Welcome to SocktoberHere at Making Stories, we love Autumn, and we love knitting socks, which is why we're so excited to be stocking some of the most beautiful natural sock yarns around. When we were thinking about something fun we could do to celebrate the start of Autumn, a Socktober celebration seemed like the perfect thing. After all, Hanna Lisa has big a huge fan of sock knitting for a long time now, and I've recently started to turn quite a few heels myself!

If you've been around a while, you know that we always like to do a little giveaway or gift to mark an event, and for Socktober, we decided that for a short time we would give away a free copy of our e-book SOCKS 2018 to every customer who purchased a skein of sock yarn from us between October 4 - 10.

Not only is it really fun to run these promotions, it also got us rediscovering the patterns from SOCKS 2018, and falling in love all over again. I thought it would be fun to do a little pattern and yarn pairing, are you ready for some major project inspiration?

    Source & Snowdonia

The simple yet satisfying cables of Source would look lovely in this new colourway of  . That green is perfection!

    Roots & Corridale Sock

Cables, moss stitch and ribbing - Roots is full of gorgeous texture, and it would look so good in the Amber colourway of  . Talk about Autumn vibes!

    Ascent & Mominoki Finnwool

We love the vibrant pop of pink that Ascent was originally knit in, but with its delicate eyelets and sweet ripples, we think it would look equally lovely in this soft grey from  .

    Arising & woollentwine

These   from woollentwine are perfect for Arising, and that green and pale pink combo is so pretty!

    Provenance & Mominoki Finnwool

The shell pattern on the front of Provenance gives me serious seaside vibes, and this beautiful   would work so well!

Origin & Oysters & Purls Corriedale

Origin has such a fun shaped cuff, and while Oysters & Purls Corridale Sportis a little heavier than the original yarn, I think it would work really well here for a pair of cozy slipper socks, or for when you'd like a slightly thicker sock to wear with winter boots!

Reason & woollentwine Corriedale Sock Set

While Reason looks beautiful in one single colour, I think it would be really nice to try it with contrasting heels, cuffs and toes too! The Corriedale Sock Sets from woollentwine would really shine and work well with the simple cables and stitch details in Reason.

Let’s wander the streets of Brussels and Paris, searching for the hidden architectural Art Nouveau gems – houses, doors, windows, street lamps. Let’s explore Berlin’s Jugendstil tile art, marvelling at the colors and shapes taking form. Let’s get lost in the work of water color artists, glass blowers, jewellers, embroidery artists, and myriads more, who dive into the shapes and curves of plants and flowers, moving, flowing, mirroring.

What it means to be an indie knitting magazine
What it means to be an indie knitting magazine

We've seen dramatic changes in the knitting magazine landscape over the past 12 months: Pom Pom Quarterly ceased publication at the end of 2023, Laine sold the majority of their company to one of the biggest Finnish publishers, and Amirisu first pivoted to books, and now to an online-only media outlet. Multicraftual magazines that often included knitting patterns were equally as affected: Making pivoted to a combined app and monthly membership business model, and Taproot first changed to a preorder model, and then very abruptly closed their business (the website is offline, hence no link).

This has left us standing as one of the very, very few indie knitting magazines in the market.
