    Hello lovelies,

one of my all-time favorite things to knit is ... hats. They knit up super quickly (at least in a heavier weight yarn), are really, really useful, and make for great gifts. Bonus points for patterns with interesting texture or cables - they are also extremely fun to knit!

As this month it's all about Gift Knitting here at Making Stories, I thought it would be fun to put together a post about those quick-to-knit and wonderful-to-gift hat patterns - and throw in a little goodie for you: All of these knit up beautifully in our new Hudson + West Co Forge. I know that this yarn is new to most of you, and splurging on something you're not sure what to make with can be a bit tricky! So from today (November 9) through November 13, you get a free hat pattern of your choice with every purchase that includes at least 1 skein of Forge.

All of the patterns down below can be knit up with just 1 skein - ideal for giving this beautiful, 100% US-made yarn a try. To get your free hat pattern, simply add your pattern of choice from this selection to your cart together with your skeins of Forge and check out.

Now, shall we take a look at these hats?

    Brooklyn Hat + Forge

Brooklyn by Meghan Babin was my first-ever Forge project - and I loved every single stitch of it! Now that the temperatures here in Berlin are finally a little colder, it's the hat that I throw on every day. The folded brim is super, super cozy, and the arched cables remind me of gothic churches.

The original sample is in Ash; I knit mine in Dusk, which is also beautiful. 1 skein will get you 1 hat!

    Cian

Cian is a design by Emily Greene for Hudson + West's latest Autumn / Winter 2022 collection. It features Emily’s architectural slanting cables, textures, and pleasing symmetry and works so, so well for anyone! The sample is knit in Tobacco, and you need 1 skein for it.

    Macara Beret

Barbara Gottwik's Macara Beret from Issue 5 is one of our evergreen patterns - we keep seeing new FOs pop up! No wonder with that gorgeous geometric pattern that looks like a beautiful star. If you want to get as close to the original sample color as possible I would recommend 'Evergreen' - and one skein of Forge will be plenty!

    Morganite Hat

Speaking of oldies-but-goodies: Remember Morganite from JEWELS? Designed by imke von Nathusius, it features stunning diamond-shapes courtesy of travelling stitches that grow smaller and smaller towards the crown. Set on a reverse stockinette background, they stand out even more! 'Cabernet', a deep violet colorway, would be absolutely stunning for this - and as with all of these, one skein will make one hat.

    Rhett

Rhett, another design from Hudson + West's latest collection, stole my heart the minute I saw it. It's the proverbial classic cabled hat - larger cables combined with smaller, yet still substaantial ones, and a 2x2 folded brim. The original sample is knit in Tobacco which is a cozy, warm brown-red. (Yes, 1 skein is enough!)

    Multitudes Hat

Me dabbling in knitwear design was short, but while I was at it, I created one hat pattern that I am really, really pleased with: Multitudes (originally from Issue 4), where I wanted to play with cables of different textures and sizes, and top it off with a lovely little pompom. 'Mustard' would be perfect for this - and 1 skein of Forge plenty!

    Oisin

Last, but very certainly not least: Oisin, another stunner from Hudson + West's Autumn / Winter 2022 collection! I love the update on classic antler cables here, and the combination with a cable shape that looks exactly like a braid. The sample is knit in Mallard, which we currently don't stock, but Juniper would make an excellent replacement!

You can see the full selection of worsted-weight hats here - and then get some Forge here! Remember, to redeem the offer, simply add a hat pattern of your choice to your cart when you purchase one (or more) skeins of Forge, and it'll be automatically reduced to 0€ / USD :) Happy hat knitting!!

Let’s wander the streets of Brussels and Paris, searching for the hidden architectural Art Nouveau gems – houses, doors, windows, street lamps. Let’s explore Berlin’s Jugendstil tile art, marvelling at the colors and shapes taking form. Let’s get lost in the work of water color artists, glass blowers, jewellers, embroidery artists, and myriads more, who dive into the shapes and curves of plants and flowers, moving, flowing, mirroring.

What it means to be an indie knitting magazine

We've seen dramatic changes in the knitting magazine landscape over the past 12 months: Pom Pom Quarterly ceased publication at the end of 2023, Laine sold the majority of their company to one of the biggest Finnish publishers, and Amirisu first pivoted to books, and now to an online-only media outlet. Multicraftual magazines that often included knitting patterns were equally as affected: Making pivoted to a combined app and monthly membership business model, and Taproot first changed to a preorder model, and then very abruptly closed their business (the website is offline, hence no link).

This has left us standing as one of the very, very few indie knitting magazines in the market.
