Nomadic shepherds – "Wanderschäfereien" in German – are becoming increasingly rare. In this traditional form of shepherding that's been around for thousands of years, flocks (and their shepherds) move around in their "home area" depending on the season and the flock's needs.

AlbLino's wool portion comes from nomadic flocks who have their roaming area in the Swabian Alps, in the South of Germany. Wanderschäferei Stotz, the shepherds whose flocks are spun into AlbLino, raises their sheep for both fleece and meat, aiming for a holistic, environmentally conscious and animal-friendly way of farming.

The wool from the nomadic flocks is blended with 15% French linen which adds strength, making this the perfect workhorse sock yarn!

Plus, as linen is a plant fiber, it takes up the dye differently than the wool, resulting in gorgeous heathered shades where the linen shines in white or black flecks.

AlbLino is a really strong, yet super soft yarn that is perfect for socks!

Schoppelwolle's AlbLino is wonderful for socks and shines in stockinette as that brings out the heathered colorways particularly well.

It also works well for larger-scale texture, like cables!

I would recommend to steer away from small cables and intricate details as they would easily get lost in the heathered shades and slight halo of the yarn.

If you're looking to knit something other than socks, AlbLino also makes great hats and shawls as it has fantastic drape.

It's also a beautiful yarn for knitwear that we're wearing during the transitional seasons - think lightweight cardigans or quarter-length-sleeved sweaters!

I bought this yarn from Making Stories a few months ago and just started knitting socks with it.
