Blending fleeces from sheep raised on Ouessant (France's western-most island) and in Finistère, Brittany, and integrating some Merino d'Arles, also raised in France, Bouclelaine's Ouessant50 is a wonderful embodiment of what sustainable yarn companies rooted in their communities do these days. It's woollen-spun into a fingering weight which makes it perfect for light sweaters and layering pieces.

• Non-superwash
• 100% French wool (50% fleeces from Ouessant, 25% fleeces from Finistère, 25% Merino d'Arles)
• Fingering weight: 400 meters per 100 grams / 437 yards per 3.53 ounces
• Recommended needle size: 3.25 - 4mm / US 3 - 6
• Woollen spun, 2 ply

• Fleeces are lovingly hand-selected by Clotilde and Brigitte, the mother-daughter duo behind Bouclelaine.
• They're then sent on to small companies in Creuse and Ariège (France) to be spun up and dyed.
• Bouclelaine's work is part of the French woolcraft development supported by the European association “A.T.E.L.I.E.R. laines d’Europe”.

Boirina Beautiful

I knit a Boirina sweater in Bouclelaine Ouessant50 Eucalyptus and finished it in time to wear on St. Patrick’s Day! I love this sweater. The sweater is wonderfully comfortable, and the yarn has shadings in it that give depth to a color that might have been too much. Not here. I find this yarn, the color, and the pattern to be a perfect match. The side cable and sleeve stitches show up beautifully. Simple, but elegant. My kind of FO.
The yarn has a bit of “scratch” to it that causes me to visualize sheep grazing in the French countryside. So glad they didn’t process out the natural feel of the yarn.

Ouessant 50 by Bouclelaine

I love this yarn. It’s woolly, so you feel it, but as their website says, it’s not itchy. It does all the things you want a wool to do well - textures, cables, ribs and just plain jersey or stockinette too - the result is not totally flat but retains a bit of character. And the colours are fabulous. I used it for Boirina (cable sides, plain front and back, in Malachite, a deep rich green - it’s really a perfect yarn for this pattern) and am now making a striped brioche shawl with the leftover plus a new color found on Making Stories’ site called Eucalyptus - less intense and heathered with a darker green, it’s really beautiful too. High quality at a very reasonable price, what more could you want from a yarn?! I suspect both the sweater and shawl will last a long time too.

Boirina is an everyday and easy to knit sweater, a timeless piece for every wardrobe. It's knitted bottom up and in the round, with drop-shoulder sleeves making it super wearable. The sweater features a "secret" cable panel on both sides that continues in the sleeves. With a recommended ease of 20-25 cm / 8-10” at the bust, the sweater gives a relax fit that suits every body type. Designed by Elena Solier Jansà.

Coill Mittens

From Eimear Earley, the designer: "Coill (Irish for ‘wood’ or ‘forest’, pronounced ‘kyle’ or ‘kweel’, depending on dialect) is a pair of lightweight mittens with cable motifs. The all-over cable and travelling stitch motif is inspired by an imagined setting for a campfire: a clearing, surrounded by trees, with twisting branches overhead, and tangled roots underground, sheltering the campers, hidden wildlife, and imagined magical creatures from fairy tales."
